DOMINICAN REPUBLIC CAMPAIGN
MEDAL. This is the medal that never was. In about 1964, President Lyndon
Johnson wanted to invade the Dominican Republic to prevent a pro-Castro
government from taking over. He wanted the support of the Organisation of
American States prior to acting. Most pulled out and many actively opposed
LBJ in the media. A very small group of countries supported him but even
fewer would participate in an invasion, thus the inter-American Force never
was. These medals were struck and then destroyed, but a number of them were
later found dumped on a rubbish tip. |

dated 23/11/1954; VICTORY ORDER , 3rd Class (Established in
1958 and awarded to commissioned officers and men for the successful
campaign against the French between 1946 and 1954). Gilt and red enamel,
silver backing plate for ribbon, together with AWARD DOCUMENT, also with
another document, probably from a North Vietnamese Military acadamy dated
30/8/1963.
A nice set to a gallant Vietnamese soldier who fought the French in the
early 1950’s. |
